STARTING A NEW CASE THROUGH THE OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY
If you or your children currently receive public assistance or have received assistance in the past, you should already have a child support case. If you have not received a letter from the Office of Child Support within three months of your public assistance case opening, call 1-866-540-0008.

If you or your children have received public assistance in the past and a child support case was not opened, or is closed, you can apply for child support services. You may apply online with MiCase, or you may print, complete and mail the IV-D Child Support Services Application/Referral – DHS-1201 form.

If you or your children have never received public assistance and you do not already have a case open, you can apply for child support services. You may apply online with MiCase, or you may print, complete and mail the IV-D Child Support Services Application/Referral – DHS-1201 form.

STARTING A NEW CASE ON YOUR OWN
Because many people know little about the laws and procedures that govern court proceedings, it usually is recommended that most people hire attorneys to represent them. But sometimes people decide to represent themselves in child custody, parenting time, and child support matters.

Michigan law requires friend of the court (FOC) offices to provide “do-it-yourself” resources (often called “pro se” or “in pro per” packets) to people who are interested in representing themselves in a child support, parenting time, or custody matter.

Michiganlegalhelp.org may be utilized to start a new case by filing a complaint, and provides information on how to answer someone else’s complaint.

SMILE (Start Making It Livable for Everyone) is an educational program for parents who have a pending divorce or other family action in Cheboygan County.  This required one-time session is held at the Cheboygan or Presque Isle County Courthouse and lasts approximately two hours.

The program assists parents to better understand how conflict existing between them affects their children, how to communicate on a positive level and how to be flexible and compromise as co-parents in making decisions about their children.

Parents will receive a letter, signed by the Chief Judge, notifying them of their scheduled SMILE program date and time.

Other parents interested in attending SMILE may register by writing to the FOC or by contacting our office at 231-627-8825.
