Flooding & Erosion Guidance for Property Owners and Residents Impacted by Recent Flooding

Recent flooding in Cheboygan County has resulted in shoreline and land erosion in some areas, particularly near Black Lake. Property owners should use caution around unstable or saturated soils and keep people, pets, and equipment away from eroding banks, including while documenting site conditions or damage for their records.

Please be advised that, in certain areas of Cheboygan County, Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) permits are generally required for any earth disturbance of 225 square feet or more. In specific circumstances, waivers from SESC permit requirements are available. Property owners should contact the Cheboygan County Department of Planning and Zoning at 231-627-8489 prior to commencing any work to obtain guidance and help determine eligibility. Early coordination with County Planning and Zoning is strongly encouraged.

In addition, certain erosion control or shoreline stabilization activities, such as grading, placement of fill, installation of riprap, or construction of retaining walls, may require permits from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE)(Gaylord Office; 989-731-4920).
